Coimbatore: In the tragic road accident that occurred on June 24 at Jambukandi in Anaikatti, Shobana, a mother who was returning home after picking up her child from school was thrown off her two-wheeler.
Her vehicle was hit by an inebriated man. After repeated incidents of such road accidents involving people who visit the TASMAC outlet operating at Jambukandi on the busy Anaikatti-Thadagam Road, people from Jambukandi blocked Anaikatti-Thadagam Road seeking immediate closure of the TASMAC outlet, which is reportedly run by the kin of the legislator there.
Shobhana is the wife of R Ramesh, a member of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy, which was at the forefront of protests against Kudankulam nuclear power plant. Dr. Ramesh and Shobhana's daughter Shanthala is under treatment at hospital for broken bones. In protest against the accidents, the public staged a protest demanding closure of the TASMAC outlet and requested to bury Shobana's mortal remains in the vicinity of the accident site.
The Tahsildar temporarily closed the TASMAC outlet and assured the public that if the District Collector orders to close the outlet, it will be shut permanently. A petition has also been filed at the District Collector's office today demanding permanent closure of the TASMAC outlet that contributes to the loss of human lives. The petition was submitted by Paiya Kounder, the DMK area secretary, DPDK General Secretary K Ramakrishnan, VCK Regional Secretary, Susi Kalaiyarasan, Sivagnanam CPI committee member and Naam Tamizhar Katchi leader, Venmani.
After handing over the petition, Dr. Ramesh said, "Young motorists in Chennai and other cities, under the influence of alcohol indulge in cheap thrill as adventure which has now spread in villages also. This has made roads dangerous for the common man. Liquor has spoilt the younger generation." He also opined that liquor sale practices as in Kerala should also be followed in TN and hence urged the TN Government to come forward to implement safe policies soon.
